Excellence in EMS
About LMVAS
In 1973 an idea was born. To have an ambulance service for both Lisbon/Mt. Vernon, Iowa. A group of dedicated citizens from both towns made plans and recruited people to go door to door, town and country alike. They raised enough donations go buy an ambulance and were in business. 25 volunteers began training and July of 1974 we had our first run. In 1989 we held one more door to door canvas and in 1990 a new building was erected to house both ambulances and all equipment, plus a meeting room and storage space.
Now in 2015, we have over 30 volunteers, a board of directors, including a medical director and attorney, and an administrative assistant. The ambulance service, fire departments and police departments from both towns work side by side to provide the best emergency service possible.
The Lisbon/Mt. Vernon ambulance service provides emergency medical services to over a 150 square mile area, services a population of more than 6,000, including more than 1000 students of Cornell College. The service operates two fully equipped ambulances and is licensed by the State of Iowa at the EMT-P level - minimal staffing. We have been in continuous operation since July, 1974, transporting about 350+ patients annually.
